Mayor’s community liaison bridges local university with outreach center

An access specialist from the University of St. Thomas Access and Disability Services had a recent experience with the City of Houston that he wanted to share. Here is what he wrote:

My name is Justo Garcia and I work in our Access and Disabilities Service Office here at University of St. Thomas-Houston. I wanted to reach out to celebrate a successful referral I received from your office. Recently, our ADS office was supporting one of our students and we reached out to your Community Liaison, Sissel Carlsen, and she connected us with Liliana Lopez from Living Hope. After following up with our student, we were able to confirm that not only did she feel supported, but that Living Hope would be able to secure a motorized chair for her. That type of community support reflects our university’s mission and fills my heart with joy! We would like to continue to build that relationship between us and hope to schedule a meeting sometime in the future to explore more ways we can support our students and advocate for the work your office is doing for our community. Have a wonderful day and we look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Sincerely,

Justo Garcia
