A recent partnership between the City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department and Houston Community College yielded a successful event. James Mable wanted to share the experience with the City Savvy community with HCD Director Keith Bynam. This is what he wrote:
Good evening Mr. Bynam,
I hope you are doing well. I am reaching out to make you aware of my experience partnering with members of your Housing & Community Development team to host the 5th Annual Career & Opportunity Fair on July 13, 2022, at the West Loop campus within the Houston Community College System. This event went above and beyond what we both expected, and we attribute the synergy and success this event to the members of your team, including Karen Franklin and Tiffany Wyatt.
I am very appreciative of Karen, as it has been through her persistence and stewardship that we were able to bring this event finally to fruition in partnership with Houston Community College as we originally attempted to partner in 2020 and were not able to do so as our world changed dramatically that year. Despite everything happening in our world, hundreds of Houstonians ventured out to connect with 80-plus employers, community resources, and departments at HCC. It was truly a festive environment for both job seekers and vendors as we are all just now starting to get back to face-to-face interactions. I could sense the excitement in the room, and I truly believe HCC-TV and your PR team did an excellent job capturing this in photos and video.
My hope is to continue building synergy with your department and potentially other departments within the City of Houston as this was one of the largest hiring events in our city this year. We reached many Houstonians in such a multifaceted manner. The experience at the 5th Annual Career & Opportunity Fair brought about a distinct sense of building community and changing lives. There are multiple HCC campuses on the transit lines making major hiring and resource-based events like the 5th Annual Career & Opportunity Fair accessible by most Houstonians who need community resources like expungement services and vaccinations, as well as education and employment. Together, I truly believe we can expand both of our organizations’ reach into the vastness of greater Houston. Let’s meet our fellow Houstonians where they are.
I will be scheduling a debriefing with Karen and her internal partners/team members in the future as we are looking forward to building upon our successes and discussing next steps.
On behalf of the planning team at HCC, we thank you all so much for all that you do to build community in greater Houston. If there is anything I can do to further our partnership, please do not hesitate to contact me. Have a wonderful evening.

James Mable, M.Ed. Director, Career & Job Placement Services Career & Job Placement Services Centers
