Shiela Tendy, of the New York-based Tendy law office, wrote to Terence O'Neill, director of the Mayor's Office of New Americans and Immigrant Communities, to thank him for participating in the "Immigration Know Your Rights" panel on April 2. The event was sponsored by the Universal Church.
"More than 600 community members, concerned about immigrants' rights, learned how to protect themselves, their families, and loved ones in the face of increasingly aggressive enforcement policy by federal immigration authorities in non-border related stops," she wrote.
"While the focus in the media has been on border-related issues, the day-to-day experience of immigrants living across the United States is filled with anxiety and a lack of criticalinformation. When planning an event such as this it is key to have the participation of experts in the field. Your willingness to share your time and expertise led to the well-rounded discussion of very important information that could dramatically make a difference in someone's life. As you know, the Church has been sponsoring these information sessions around the country," Tendy wrote.
