The Houston Police Department will be celebrating its 36th annual Comida/Food Drive Dec. 11. With COVID-19 restrictions in place during 2020, the department revolutionized last year's approach and worked collaboratively with Kroger to purchase holiday meals for pre-selected families in need.
“We truly believe that our partnership with Kroger for the 35th year was the best yet, and we look forward to expanding our efforts in order to bless even more families during the 2021 holiday season!” department officials said in a news release.
Houston Police officers from around the city were asked to identify families in need. These officers assisted the families by registering them to receive a voucher for the holiday meal. The voucher was then presented to officers and staff on Distribution Day, in exchange for a delicious holiday meal. Each holiday meal contained Boneless Turkey, Sweet Potato Soufflé, Green Bean Casserole, Old Fashioned Bread Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Turkey Gravy, Hawaiian Rolls, and Pumpkin Pie.
The department purchased 150 holiday meals from Kroger in 2020 and hoped to increase this number each year. They worked diligently to locate willing businesses in the Houston area to provide corporate donations, allowing them to purchase more holiday meals from Kroger for future food drives. Each holiday meal allowed them to bless a less fortunate family from across the Houston area.
In addition this year, HPD again partnered with Toiletries for Families. Their gracious donations allowed them to reach families beyond providing a holiday meal. Pepsi also continued their long-standing partnership by providing drinks paired with the holiday meals.
The holiday meals were distributed Dec.11, 2021 from 9 a.m. until 11a.m. at Houston Police Department's headquarters, located at 1200 Travis St.
