Sixth Annual Mayor's Back to School Fest

The 6th Annual Mayor's Back 2 School Fest Presented by Shell and hosted by University of Houston on August 13 was a great success. The fest prepared thousands of children grades K-5 for the new school year by providing immunizations, dental and vision screenings, school supplies, underwear, giveaways and informational resources.  The fest is an initiative of the Department of Neighborhoods, the Mayor's Office of Special  Events and the Mayor’s Office of Education Initiatives.  View this pictorial capturing fun, exciting fest scenes as children and parents met Mayor Sylvester Turner and toured the many booths and exhibits sponsored by city departments, corporate supporters and nonprofit entities.

Mayor's Youth Council

The Mayor’s Youth Council completed its 2015-2016 season with guest speaker and First Daughter Ashley Turner. Youth Council members mirror the elected Houston City Council representing both district and at-large positions. They learn about city government and give voice to Houston’s youth on issues that affect young people across the city.  The 2016-2017 term will begin in October. The Mayor’s Youth Council is part of the Department of Neighborhoods youth programs.

Mayor's Anti-Gang Summer Youth Enrichment

The Mayor’s Anti-Gang Office had an active summer providing services to almost 300 youth through its Summer Youth Enrichment and Campo del Sol programs. The Summer Youth Enrichment and Campo del Sol programs provide learning opportunities and good old-fashioned summer fun through sports and recreation activities, arts and crafts, guest speakers, and field trips such as this one to the Houston Fire Department’s Training Academy.
