The Houston Housing and Community Development Department joined the SPARK Park Program to celebrate groundbreakings and dedication of six SPARK projects during the week of November 14 – 20, 2015.
The SPARK program develops neighborhood parks on public school grounds. Using available public land is a fast and cost effective way to increase park acreage. In 1983, SPARK was founded by then Council Member Eleanor Tinsley. In January 1996, it was identified as a program of the mayor. SPARK has built more than 200 community parks in 12 different school districts throughout the Houston area. Each park is designed based on ideas and needs of the school and surrounding neighborhoods.
The following schools were celebrated: Nottingham Elementary (Dedication); Lockhart Elementary (Dedication); Clifton Middle School (Groundbreaking); Lyons Elementary (Groundbreaking); Valley Oaks Elementary (Dedication); Stevens Elementary (Dedication) and Piney Point (Dedication). The projects are supported by HCDD Community Development Block Grant, school fundraisers; and HISD contributions.
