The Housing and Community Development Department joined the Zieben Group and local and regional officials to celebrate the grand opening of the Gulf Coast Arms Apartments, a 160-unit affordable rental community in October.
The Gulf Coast Arms is a Section 8 Subsidized project funded with Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and HUD CDBG HOME funds from the City of Houston Housing and Community Development Department. The project is certified at the LEED Platinum level through the U.S. Green Building Council.
The complex provides an on-site laundry facility and controlled access gates. Community features include a covered pavilion, barbecue grill and picnic areas, splash pad, and two playscapes. The activity center and business center provide a gathering place for meetings as well as educational and community activities.
The Gulf Coast Arms complex has school-age children in two-thirds of the units. Last Thanksgiving, the nonprofit ProUnitas organized a health fair with 32 health care services, health insurance sign-ups and $15,000 worth of food bank donations.
