The wait was finally over: It had been five years since the Houston’s first World Series title in 2017, and several long hours since the throngs of fans began gathering downtown to celebrate this second one.

The Astros had just beaten the Philadelphia Phillies two days earlier in front of a home crowd in Game 6, so when the newly crowned champs began parading down Smith Street on Nov. 7, jubilant fans clad in orange and blue and rainbow colors as far as the eye could see erupted.

Cheers began building as the long line of cars, trucks, floats, local dignitaries and marching bands passed, then hit a crescendo as the last and largest floats carrying the Astros rolled by.

The stars were out in force, waving to fans, encouraging cheers, and tossing T-shirts into a crowd so huge it was more than a block deep at some intersections. There was the youngest star, rookie shortstop Jeremy Pena, who capped a breakout season with multiple post-season awards (include ALCS and World Series MVP); the oldest star, manager Dusty Baker, who played on a championship L.A. Dodger team four decades earlier but had found another ring elusive through 25 seasons as a manager; fan favorite star José Altuve, a cornerstone of this dynastic run the Astros have been on; the resurgent star, pitcher Justin Verlander, who had been doubted but returned to dominant form this year after losing a season to Tommy John surgery; and all the others … starters, the lesser known players off the deepest bench in baseball, the superb bullpen, the owner, front-office personnel, family members.

As for these Astros fans, two days earlier they had made Minute Maid shake when Yordan Álvarez launched that moonshot of a homer to win Game 6, celebrated and high-fived in living rooms and sports bars, and uncorked their jubilation as they spilled into the streets around the ballpark and across town.

So, after 162 regular season games and nearly a month of postseason games, the parade served as one more time to collectively cheer and celebrate the ultimate achievement of their team and their town — 2022 World Series champions.
