New basketball league supports comradery and wellness among city employees

There’s still time to come out and support your favorite department team in the inaugural City of Houston Employee Basketball League.

Held at the Fonde Recreation Center every Thursday since Aug. 25, six teams have been battling it out to see which city department team will take home the championship.

The department teams competing include:

  • Houston Public Works (Shot Callerz)
  • Houston Parks and Recreation (COH Dream Team)
  • Housing and Community Development (the Outlaws)
  • Houston Airport System (the Aviators)
  • Houston Health Department (the Hot Shots)
  • Combined team from ARA, Finance, HITS and Human Resources (the Bedrock Ballers)

This free, family-friendly event aimed at encouraging employee wellness and engagement, has welcomed basketball fans each Thursday night to cheer on competitive interdepartmental basketball.

Heading into week six, the schedule of games for Thursday, Sept. 29, is:

7 p.m.   Court 1 — Hot Shots vs. the Outlaws
              Court 2 — Public Enemy vs. Bedrock Ballers

8 p.m.   Court 1 — COH Dream Team vs. Shot Callerz
              Court 2 — House of Hoops vs the Aviators

The standings after five weeks are:

  1. COH Dream Team 5-0
  2. Hot Shots 4-1
  3. Outlaws  4-1
  4. Shot Callerz 3-2
  5. Public Enemy 2-2
  6. Aviators 1-4
  7. Bedrock Ballers 1-5
  8. House of Hoops 0-5

The top four teams will earn a spot in the playoffs. Playoffs are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. The league championship game is Thursday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. See you there!
