Showing an outpouring of compassion, the line of pet-seeking Houstonians snaked around the ground floor of the George R. Brown Convention Center at the multi-agency Mega Pet Adoption Event on November 8 and 9.
BARC was among nearly a dozen animal shelters and pet rescue agencies who participated in the event hosted by the Petco Foundation and the Brandywine Valley SPCA.
A record-breaking 1,450 pets found new homes that weekend including at least 250 pets from BARC.
Mega Adoption Event organizations included Montgomery County Animal Shelter, Fort Bend County Animal Services, Palm Valley Animal Center, Harris County Animal Shelter, Galveston County Animal Resource Center, SPCA of Brazoria County, Dallas Animal Services and Adoption Center, Friends of the South Houston Animal Shelter, Rosenberg Animal Control and Shelter, along with other Texas organizations.
Onsite adoptions were $25, and all pets were spayed/neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and ready to go home the same day.
New cat adoption facility
More than 75 BARC cats were adopted at the Mega Adoption Event, making room in the brand new Don Sanders Center For Cats & Kittens in the BARC Adoption Center,.
The state-of-the-art facility will shelter more than 150 cats and feature kennel space, free-roaming spaces, and areas where potential adopters can get to know the cat they are interested in adopting.
Until recently, adoptable cats were housed in trailers on the property at 3300 Carr Street. BARC will host the Cat Adoption Grand Opening at noon on November 23 and 24. Adopt any cat or kitten for just $1.
The new center needs donations of the following items: Canned cat or kitten food, small cat beds and cat toys.
