Hurricane season officially started on June 1, and continues through November 30. The City of Houston urges residents to prepare for this hurricane season regardless of residents living in evacuation zones or not.  As a safety measure everyone should be ready to respond if a hurricane threatens our coast during the four months of peak hurricane season.

Steps to take

  • Have an emergency kit with enough supplies to last 5-7 days. For a full list of supplies to have in your kits, download a copy of the City’s Disaster Preparedness Guide at houstonoem.org
  • Make an emergency plan, if you don’t live in an evacuation area secure your windows from strong winds and select a room on the lowest floor possible to take shelter.
  • If you live in an evacuation area, be ready to evacuate and designate a place you’ll meet with your family.
  • Know your neighbors, make a plan to work together if a hurricane hits.
